From Raw Logs to Marketable Assets

Most companies are sitting on event logs they treat as a cost center. Here's how to turn those logs into datasets people pay for, without a six-month engineering project.

Your application writes gigabytes of logs every day. Most of that is noise. But buried in the noise is signal buyers would pay for: user behaviors, error patterns, performance baselines, geographic coverage. The question is how to extract it without derailing the roadmap.

A short production path

  1. Pick one event type that already drives decisions internally.
  2. Strip identifiers until an auditor would call the output anonymised.
  3. Aggregate to the smallest unit a buyer could use (daily, zip code, etc.).
  4. Publish a weekly snapshot as a flat-fee listing to gauge demand.
  5. Promote the top-performing listing to a subscription with an API.

Within a quarter you'll know whether your logs are a cost or a product. Both are useful answers.

The data was always valuable. You just hadn't packaged it yet.
