One year of month-end close checklists, reconciliations, review notes and sign-offs across small business clients of a Japanese accounting firm.
Quill & Ledger closes the books each month for several hundred small clients. This dataset records each checklist item from all twelve closes in FY2023: bank reconciliation, accruals, payroll tie-out, tax review, and so on. Items show the preparer, reviewer, timing, status and any review note. Review notes are where most of the insight lies, since they point to an error or missing document and explain what needs to change. Reconciliation workbooks are attached for a sample of about 60 clients, showing what was actually done behind each tick mark. Client names have been replaced, and workbook amounts scaled. Checklist templates differ somewhat by client size, so items don't line up perfectly, although we provide a mapping for the most common ones. Staff sometimes marked items complete in batches at day's end, which makes item timing less reliable than it appears.
