Six years of payroll exceptions with error types, corrections, approvals and client queries from a Japanese outsourced payroll team serving many employers.
Most payroll runs go smoothly, and the ones that don't end up in this log. Quill & Ledger's payroll team recorded each exception across six years of processing for its multi-site clients: missing timesheets, allowance errors, retroactive pay changes, social insurance updates and bank rejections. Each exception row includes the type, how it was detected, how long it stayed open, the correction applied and the approver. Client queries and internal notes are attached as text. Monthly volume patterns are clear, particularly around April, when annual changes take effect in Japan. This is employment and pay information, so we treat it as high sensitivity even after processing. Employee identifiers are replaced, amounts are banded and free text was reviewed for names. Notes are overwhelmingly in Japanese. Payroll runs that had no exceptions aren't included, so you can't compute an error rate from this data alone.
