Quill & Ledger keeps the books for about 430 small businesses in Japan, and this archive covers ten years of that work. The main table holds general ledger entries with account, tax category, amount and date, grouped by anonymized client and fiscal period. Alongside the ledger are scanned receipts and invoices for roughly the last five years, plus message threads where accountants ask clients about unclear transactions. Those threads are the interesting part: they show how an ambiguous bank line gets resolved into a correct journal entry. Adjusting entries are flagged, and they can be traced to the original posting. Client business types are given only as broad sectors. Consumption tax rules changed in 2019 and again in 2023, so tax categories differ across periods; we supply a mapping. Receipts are mostly in Japanese, and some scans are poor. Amounts are unscaled, which is why client identities were handled strictly.
